How the five-year period for naturalisation is counted
For those seeking nationality by naturalisation, the five-year period was only counted from the issue of the residence card. Consequently, between the application and obtaining the first card, applicants could wait up to two years, especially during and after the pandemic, which made the naturalisation process more difficult.
The amendment to the Nationality Law promulgated by the President of the Republic on 24 February introduced a crucial change aimed at simplifying this process and making it more accessible.
In addition to the residence period after the residence permit is issued, the time elapsed since the temporary residence application will now also be taken into account, provided the application is subsequently approved.
This inclusion is a direct response to the frequent delays by the competent authorities in analysing and processing residence applications.
