Changes to the Nationality Law: Descendants of Sephardic Jews

On 5 March 2024, amendments to the Portuguese Nationality Law were published that are particularly relevant for descendants of Sephardic Jews. But what were these changes?

  1. Residence in Portugal: Sephardic Jews wishing to apply for Portuguese nationality must have lived in Portugal for at least three years, counted from the issue of their Residence Permit.
  2. Specialised assessment: the requirement to demonstrate membership of a Sephardic community, together with the certificate issued by a Jewish Community in Portugal, will now be assessed by a committee specialised for this purpose.

Applications submitted before 1 April 2024

These changes come into force on 1 April 2024. But what happens to applications submitted before that date?

For applications submitted between 1 September 2022 and 31 March 2024, it was established that, in addition to proof of membership of the Sephardic community, applicants must also provide evidence of their connection to Portugal (for example by showing ownership of property in the country, regular visits throughout their life or holding a Portuguese residence permit for more than one year).
