On 5 March 2024, amendments to the Portuguese Nationality Law were published that are particularly relevant for adult children who wish to acquire nationality of origin. But what were these changes?
What has changed?
From the entry into force of the law, citizens over 18 have the opportunity to acquire nationality of origin, provided their parentage is established through court proceedings or recognition in a court action.
To do so, the nationality application must be submitted within three years of the final court judgment. This measure also applies to cases in which parentage was established before the new provisions came into force.
The aim is to ensure that those whose parentage has been recognised by the courts have the opportunity to be considered Portuguese citizens.
